The custom of exchanging eggs at Easter and greet each other with the words: Christ is risen! Risen Indeed! - Perhaps even today everyone remembers. But now many people know, is related this custom, required as part of the main Orthodox holiday - the light of the day of Easter.

There are several theories explaining the emergence of this custom. According to legend, the first egg as a symbol of resurrection used the holy Mary Magdalene. Arriving in Rome from the Holy Sepulcher with the good news, she presented the emperor Tiberius red colored eggs and the words "Christ is risen!" Began his sermon. But it is, so to speak, the official church version. The people of the same origin of Easter eggs, there are many romantic and touching legends. That's one of them.

When Christ crucified, a drop of his blood fell to the ground, takes the form of chicken eggs and become hard as stone. Hot tears of Our Lady, weeping at the foot of the cross fell on these blood-red eggs and left them wonderful patterns. The faithful gathered caked blood of Christ and divided it among themselves. When it swept among them the glad tidings of the Resurrection, they exchanged greeting "Christ is risen!" And at the same time passed a frozen droplets of blood.

According to another legend, Jesus Christ, as a child, he loved the chickens, feed them and willingly played with them. And Virgin, to please him, painted eggs, and bestowed their son as a toy. When it began the trial of Christ, Mother of God went to Pilate, hoping to appease him, brought with it skillfully painted eggs. When she fell on her knees in front of Pontius Pilate, begging him to the Son, the eggs rolled out of the apron and rolled all over the world ... Since then, they remind us of the sufferings of Christ and of the subsequent in taking care of His miraculous resurrection.

However, the egg was considered a symbol of birth, the prototype of the universe long before the appearance of Christ, which is reflected in the beliefs and legends of almost all ancient peoples: the Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans.

The Slavs, who accepted Christianity, Egg has been associated with fertility of the soil, with the spring rebirth of nature. He attributed the miraculous strength and magical properties: it protected the house from fire and livestock diseases, crop from hail, etc. It is no accident in Russia in olden times, not only painted eggs at Easter, but during the spring and summer work, and during the holidays eggs became the subject of ceremonial appearances - such as egg rolling the chute.

The custom of exchanging Easter painted eggs respected in Russia, almost all the time. The exception was a phase in Soviet history say that for various reasons not worth it. But even then, contrary to the orders from above, people do not forget the tradition and during the Easter still exchanging colored eggs. Such developments have in no way reflected on to form many centuries ago, custom. And to this day in Russia carefully preserve the traditions of Easter, as the main Orthodox holiday.
